Yuqi Wang
Also known as Wang Yuqi
Yuqi Wang is a researcher who works on multimodal and tabular language models at Reka AI and the University of Hong Kong. After studying software engineering at Tongji University until 2022, he completed a master's in computer science at the University of Hong Kong in 2024 under Qi Liu. He joined Reka AI as an intern in June 2023 and worked there full-time from July 2024 to August 2025, and in 2024 he coauthored the Reka Core, Flash, and Edge report and the Vibe-Eval benchmark. UniTabE, a pretrained tabular encoder from 2023, and Multimodal ArXiv, a dataset of scientific figures from 2024, are among his other papers. Since 2025, he is a PhD student in computer and data science at the University of Hong Kong and works part-time at Reka AI.
Timeline
-
2018–2022
Software engineering at Tongji
He studies software engineering at Tongji University and earns a Bachelor of Engineering in 2022.
-
2022–2024
Master's at HKU under Qi Liu
He completes a master's in computer science at the University of Hong Kong from 2022 to 2024, with distinction, advised by Qi Liu, an assistant professor in HKU's Department of Computer Science and a co-founder of Reka. His dissertation is titled Solve Mathematical Problems in Textual Image.
-
June 2023–August 2025
From Reka intern to full-time
He joins Reka AI as an intern in June 2023 and works there full-time from July 2024 to August 2025. Reka is a company committed to the development of large foundation models.
-
July 2023
The UniTabE tabular encoder
In July 2023, he coauthors UniTabE with Yazheng Yang, Guang Liu, Ledell Wu and Qi Liu. The method represents each table element with a module called TabUnit, followed by a Transformer encoder, and is pretrained on about 13B table samples collected from Kaggle; the paper appears at ICLR 2024.
-
March 2024
The Multimodal ArXiv dataset
In March 2024, he coauthors Multimodal ArXiv with six others, including Lei Li and Qi Liu. The dataset pairs ArXivCap, with 6.4M images and 3.9M captions from 572K ArXiv papers, with ArXivQA, which brings a 10.4% absolute accuracy gain on a multimodal mathematical reasoning benchmark; the paper appears at ACL 2024 in Bangkok.
-
April 2024
Reka Core, Flash, and Edge
In April 2024, he is among the authors of Reka's technical report on Reka Core, Flash, and Edge, multimodal language models trained from scratch that process text, images, video, and audio. On multimodal chat, Core ranks as the second most preferred model in a blind third-party human evaluation.
-
May 2024
The Vibe-Eval benchmark
In May 2024, he coauthors Vibe-Eval, an open benchmark of 269 visual understanding prompts, 100 of them hard, for evaluating multimodal chat models. Automatic evaluation with Reka Core roughly correlates with human judgment.
-
Since 2025
PhD at HKU, part-time at Reka
In September 2025, he starts a PhD in computer and data science at the University of Hong Kong and moves to part-time work at Reka AI.
