Lab leader

Yuhuai (Tony) Wu

Also known as Tony Wu

Yuhuai (Tony) Wu co-founded xAI and co-authored Minerva and STaR in 2022 and AlphaGeometry, which Nature published in January 2024. At Google he worked on the N2Formal team led by Christian Szegedy, and at Stanford he did a postdoc with Percy Liang and Jay McClelland. A University of Toronto doctorate advised by Roger B. Grosse ended in 2024. He joined xAI's founding team in July 2023, led its reasoning team, resigned in February 2026, and serves on the scientific advisory board of Integrated Biosciences.

Timeline

  1. 2022

    Minerva and STaR

He co-authors Minerva for NeurIPS 2022. The model is further trained on technical content and reaches state-of-the-art results on technical benchmarks without external tools. With Eric Zelikman, Jesse Mu, and Noah D. Goodman, he co-authors STaR in 2022, on bootstrapping reasoning with reasoning.

  2. July 2023

    Founding member at xAI

In July 2023 he joins xAI as one of 12 founding members. He arrives as a former research scientist at Google, from the N2Formal team led by Christian Szegedy, and as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford with Percy Liang and Jay McClelland. Internships at DeepMind and OpenAI precede that role.

  3. January 2024

    AlphaGeometry in Nature

Nature publishes AlphaGeometry in January 2024 with him as a co-author at Google DeepMind. The system solves 25 of 30 olympiad geometry problems and approaches the performance of an average IMO gold medallist. He advocates for the neuro-symbolic setting and advises on data, training, and codebase choices.

  4. 2024

    A Toronto doctorate

A doctorate at the University of Toronto ends in 2024, with Roger B. Grosse as doctoral advisor. Jimmy Ba advises the PhD alongside Roger Grosse.

  5. February 2026

    Leaving the reasoning team

In February 2026 he resigns from xAI. He leads the reasoning team as a co-founder.

  6. Since February 2026

    An advisory board seat

He joins the scientific advisory board of Integrated Biosciences in February 2026. The company integrates optogenetics, chemistry, and AI to discover small-molecule therapeutics for age-related diseases.
