Researcher

Yue Zhang

Yue Zhang completed an Oxford doctorate in 2009 on statistical Chinese processing. Zhang conducted postdoctoral work at Cambridge, taught and researched at SUTD from 2012 to 2018, and held Westlake appointments from 2018. He became a full professor there in June 2022. His research covers parsing, information extraction, translation, and language models. In a 2023 manuscript, he co-authored Fast-DetectGPT, which uses conditional probability curvature to detect machine-generated text.

Timeline

  1. 2009–2012

    Statistical language processing

Zhang completed his Oxford doctorate in December 2009, working on statistical processing of Chinese. He conducted Cambridge postdoctoral research from 2010 to 2012 on analysing and improving machine translation output. This places language structure and learning at the start of his research career.

  2. 2012–2018

An NLP research group at SUTD

He was an assistant professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design from 2012 to 2018. He led its natural language processing lab and contributed to curriculum work.

  3. 2018–2022

    Westlake language research

Zhang became an associate professor at Westlake in September 2018 and a full professor in June 2022. His research includes syntactic and semantic analysis, information extraction, translation, and text generation. These are concrete language-processing tasks.

  4. 2023

    Detecting generated text

Zhang co-authored Fast-DetectGPT, first submitted in October 2023. The paper uses conditional probability curvature to compare word choices and replaces a costly perturbation step with sampling.
