Yu Jiang
Yu Jiang is a Cornell researcher whose work applies computer vision and autonomous robots to agriculture. He earns bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from China, completes a Ph.D. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Georgia in 2019, and joins Cornell AgriTech as an assistant research professor in Systems Engineering and Data Analytics in 2019. His CAIR Lab develops sensing, robotics and AI technologies for agriculture; his work includes Blackbird and the PhytoPatholoBot for grape disease scouting. He coauthors a 2023 paper on autonomous vineyard navigation, and in 2025 the PhytoPatholoBot matches experienced human scouts in vineyard disease detection. His 2026 work includes HyperBird, which detects grape diseases before visible symptoms; as of October 2026, he is CAIR's principal investigator and an assistant professor of Systems Engineering and Data Analytics.

Timeline
-
2018
GPhenoVision for cotton
In 2018, he coauthors GPhenoVision, a ground mobile system that combines RGB-D, thermal and hyperspectral imaging for field-based cotton phenotyping. The team tests it in a cotton field across 23 genotypes.
-
2019
A PhD and Cornell appointment
He earns bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from China. In 2019, he completes a Ph.D. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Georgia and joins Cornell AgriTech as an assistant research professor in Systems Engineering and Data Analytics.
-
2021
Blackbird for grape screening
In 2021, Blackbird is released to speed assessment of thousands of grape leaf samples for infection. Jiang develops the robotic high-throughput phenotyping camera with Lance Cadle-Davidson; it records red, blue and green wavelengths.
-
April 2022–November 2022
CAIR Lab and PhytoPatholoBots
By April 2022, he is an assistant professor in Cornell's Horticulture Section, and his CAIR Lab develops sensing, robotics and AI for agriculture and life science applications. In November 2022, he expands the PhytoPatholoBot for vineyard use; Cornell plans to deploy the computer-vision robots to four U.S. grape breeding programs.
-
2023
Vision-based vineyard navigation
In 2023, he coauthors a vision-based navigation framework for vineyard robots. A learning-based path detector, row tracking and row switching let a robot traverse vineyard rows autonomously.
-
August 2024
Robots for satellite disease models
In August 2024, he demonstrates the PhytoPatholoBot during NASA's Space for Ag Tour. The robot uses computer vision and GPS navigation to map grape disease, and its field data helps ground-truth satellite models.
-
September 2025
Disease scouting at human accuracy
In September 2025, the PhytoPatholoBot matches highly trained human scouts in vineyard disease detection. Tests in Cornell and commercial vineyards show its disease analyses run efficiently on low power; Jiang's AI model classifies canopy and disease pixels in side-view images.
-
September 2026
HyperBird for early detection
In September 2026, he is a senior scientist on Cornell's HyperBird project, a high-throughput hyperspectral platform that detects grape diseases before symptoms appear. HyperBird extends Blackbird and provides roughly 200 times more spectral resolution per pixel.
-
As of October 2026
PI of Cornell's CAIR Lab
As of October 2026, he is principal investigator of Cornell's CAIR Lab and an assistant professor of Systems Engineering and Data Analytics at Cornell AgriTech.
