Yu-Gang Jiang
Also known as 姜育刚, Yugang Jiang
Yu-Gang Jiang is a Fudan University computer scientist whose research is large-scale video understanding and open datasets. He earned a computer science Ph.D. at City University of Hong Kong in 2010, and a system he devised won the multimedia event detection task at NIST TRECVID in 2010. He co-authored a 2016 paper on the THUMOS challenge, a benchmark for action recognition introduced in 2013, and in 2015 he received the ACM SIGMM Rising Star Award while directing the Big Video Data Analytics Lab. In 2022 the International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a fellow for contributions to large-scale and trustworthy video understanding, and open-source datasets, and in 2024 the IEEE named him a fellow for contributions to large-scale video analysis and open-source datasets. He is vice president of Fudan University and, since 2025, dean of the College of Intelligent Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing, with research on multimodal artificial intelligence and embodied artificial intelligence.

Timeline
-
2010
A doctorate in Hong Kong
He receives a Ph.D. in computer science from City University of Hong Kong in 2010.
-
2010–2011
A win at TRECVID
In 2010 a system he devises wins the multimedia event detection task at NIST TRECVID. In 2011 he constructs the Columbia Consumer Video benchmark. He works as a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University and later as a faculty member at Fudan University.
-
2015
The SIGMM Rising Star Award
In 2015 he receives the ACM SIGMM Rising Star Award for contributions to video content recognition and search. He is an associate professor and doctoral advisor in the School of Computer Science at Fudan University and directs the Big Video Data Analytics Lab. He develops VIREO-374 and CU-VIREO374, two large sets of visual concept classifiers.
-
2016
A paper on THUMOS
With Haroon Idrees, Amir R. Zamir, Alex Gorban, Ivan Laptev, Rahul Sukthankar, and Mubarak Shah, he describes the THUMOS challenge, introduced in 2013 as a benchmark for action recognition. In 2014 the authors add temporally untrimmed videos. Three editions organized from 2013 to 2015 make THUMOS a benchmark for action classification and detection.
-
2018–2021
Dean of computer science
From 2018 to 2021 he is dean of the School of Computer Science at Fudan University. He is a professor in that school from 2011.
-
