Researcher

Woodrow W. Bledsoe

Woodrow W. Bledsoe earned a Berkeley doctorate in 1953 and worked at Sandia before cofounding Panoramic Research in 1960. With Iben Browning, he developed an early N-tuple pattern-recognition method. His face-recognition work with Helen Chan and Charles Bisson used human-measured facial features and computer comparison. He joined UT Austin in 1966 and pursued automated reasoning, including mathematical proof checking. He later led AI work at MCC and returned to UT. He died in October 1995.

Timeline

  1. 1953–1959

    Mathematics and pattern recognition

Bledsoe earned his doctorate in 1953 and later worked at Sandia. In 1959, he and Iben Browning developed the N-tuple method for recognizing patterns such as printed and handwritten characters, using learned combinations of image measurements.

  2. 1960

    Cofound an early AI laboratory

Bledsoe, Browning and Lloyd Lockingen founded Panoramic Research in 1960. The group studied AI-related problems, including pattern recognition.

  3. 1964–1965

Combine human measurement with face recognition

Bledsoe, Helen Chan and Charles Bisson studied identifying faces from photographs. Operators measured feature coordinates; the computer compared distances after normalization for pose and scale. This early system included human input.

  4. 1966

Teaching and automated reasoning at UT

He began a UT mathematics appointment in January 1966. He also began proof-checker work at Sandia that summer with E. J. Gilbert. These projects connect his mathematical background with the search for automated reasoning methods.

  5. 1984–1995

Research leadership and a lasting record

He held an AI leadership role at MCC in 1984 and returned to UT in 1987. He died on 4 October 1995.
