Researcher

Victor Prisacariu

Also known as Victor Adrian Prisacariu

Victor Prisacariu is a computer-vision researcher whose work spans 3D reconstruction, SLAM, and spatial mapping. He earned a first-class computer-engineering degree at Gheorghe Asachi Technical University in 2008 and a DPhil in Engineering Science at Oxford in 2012. He co-authored InfiniTAM, co-founded 6D.ai, and co-authored Niantic’s 2024 article on its Large Geospatial Model. He is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Oxford and Chief Scientist at Niantic Spatial. In September 2026, he coauthors AutoCompass for visual localization from weak pose labels.

Timeline

  1. 2008–2012

Engineering studies in Iasi and Oxford

He earns a first-class computer-engineering degree at Gheorghe Asachi Technical University in Iasi in 2008 and a DPhil in Engineering Science at Oxford in 2012.

  2. 2012–2017

    Postdoctoral work and professorship

After his DPhil in 2012, he continues at Oxford first as an EPSRC prize Postdoctoral Researcher, then as a Dyson Senior Research Fellow. Oxford appoints him Associate Professor in 2017.

  3. 2017

    InfiniTAM v3 reconstruction framework

In 2017, he coauthors the InfiniTAM v3 report, a flexible 3D reconstruction framework with robust camera tracking and keyframe-based scene relocalisation.

  4. March 2020

    Niantic acquires 6D.ai

Niantic acquires 6D.ai in March 2020. He had co-founded 6D.ai, which built APIs for augmented reality and a smartphone SDK for crowdsourced, real-time 3D semantic maps.

  5. 2024

    Niantic’s Large Geospatial Model

In 2024, he coauthors Niantic’s article on the Large Geospatial Model, which describes using large-scale machine learning to connect scenes with millions of other scenes.

  6. 2025

    Full Professor at Oxford

In 2025, Oxford appoints him Full Professor of Artificial Intelligence, while he serves as Chief Scientist at Niantic Spatial.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor and chief scientist

He is Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Oxford and Chief Scientist at Niantic Spatial. In September 2026, he coauthors AutoCompass, a method for training neural map matchers from inaccurate absolute pose labels.
