Tong-Haing Fin

Tong-Haing Fin is a computing researcher whose work spans distributed collaboration, cross-language retrieval and IBM Watson's question-answering system. His paper with Takashi Masuda appears in proceedings for the 14th IBM Computer Science Symposium, held in October 1980 and published by Springer in 1982; he also coauthored a shared-pointer design for distributed meetings in 1990. IBM-assigned patents name him as an inventor on Internet page sharing and cross-language document search, and he coauthored a 2004 paper on glossary-based technical-support retrieval. In 2010, he was among IBM's researchers and engineers responsible for Watson and DeepQA; he coauthored an IBM Research report on building Watson in 2013 and was on the team when it received AAAI's Feigenbaum Prize.

Timeline

  1. 1980–1982

    Program behavior and its models

The 14th IBM Computer Science Symposium takes place in October 1980, and its Springer proceedings are published in 1982. They include “Program behavior and its models,” a paper he coauthors with Takashi Masuda.

  2. 1990

    A telepointing tool

In 1990, he coauthors “A telepointing tool for distributed meeting systems” with Amane Nakajima. The tool proposes a loosely coupled shared pointer that gives local operations priority over remote telepointing.

  3. 1996–2001

    Internet web page sharing

In 1996, he files an IBM patent for Internet web-page sharing with Tetsunosuke Fujisaki, Makoto Kobayashi and Masahide Shinozaki; the US patent is granted in 2001.

  4. 2002–2007

    Multilingual document search

In 2002, he co-invents an IBM search method that accepts a keyword query in one supported language and returns matching documents in multiple languages. The US patent is granted in 2007.

  5. 2004

    Glossary-based support search

In 2004, he coauthors “Glossary extraction and utilization in the information search and delivery system for IBM Technical Support.”

  6. 2010–2013

    Watson and DeepQA

In 2010, he is among the IBM team members responsible for Watson and the DeepQA architecture. Watson is designed to compete with human Jeopardy! champions in real time, and DeepQA combines more than 100 techniques for natural-language analysis, evidence gathering and answer ranking. In 2013, he coauthors an IBM Research report, “Tools and Methods for Building Watson,” with Eric Brown, Eddie Epstein and J. William Murdock.

  7. 2013

    IBM Watson Team member

In 2013, the IBM Watson Team wins AAAI's Feigenbaum Prize for showing that a synthesis of symbolic knowledge representation, natural language understanding and statistical machine learning can achieve human-level performance in real-time factual question answering. Fin is one of its members.
