Stanley Osher
As of October 2026, Stanley Osher is a distinguished professor emeritus at UCLA whose research spans image processing, computer vision, and deep learning. Born in 1942, he earned degrees at Brooklyn College and New York University, held research and faculty posts at Brookhaven, Berkeley, and Stony Brook, and joined UCLA in 1977. With Leonid Rudin and Emad Fatemi, he coauthored a 1992 paper on total-variation noise removal. In 2017, he connected nonlinear partial differential equations with methods for training deep neural networks. He received the Gauss Prize in 2014, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2018, and reflected on 25 years of leadership at IPAM in 2025.
