S. M. Girvin

Also known as Steven M. Girvin, Steven Girvin

Steven Girvin is a Yale physicist who co-developed circuit QED, an architecture for quantum computing built on superconducting circuits. He studied physics at Bates College and Princeton, then worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and at Indiana University before joining Yale in 2001. His work on the fractional quantum Hall effect earned him a share of the 2007 Buckley Condensed Matter Prize of the American Physical Society. From 2007 to 2017 he served as Deputy Provost for Research at Yale. He is Sterling Professor of Physics, the highest academic honor bestowed upon a Yale faculty member, a post he took up in 2024.

Timeline

  1. 1950–1977

    Bates College and Princeton

He is born in 1950. He finishes a physics degree at Bates College and earns a theoretical physics PhD at Princeton in 1977.

  2. 1979–1987

    NIST and Indiana University

From 1979 to 1987 he works as a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In 1987 he joins the faculty of Indiana University.

  3. 2001–2005

    Joining the Yale faculty

In 2001 he joins the Yale faculty. At Yale he is initially appointed Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics in 2005.

  4. 2004

    A cavity QED architecture

In 2004 he co-authors a paper on cavity quantum electrodynamics for superconducting circuits. The architecture it describes is attractive for quantum computing and control.

  5. 2007

    The Oliver E. Buckley Prize

In 2007 the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize of the American Physical Society goes to him, Allan H. MacDonald, and James P. Eisenstein. The award is for their work on the fractional quantum Hall effect.

  6. 2007–2017

    Deputy provost for research

From 2007 to 2017 he serves as Deputy Provost for Research at Yale.

  7. 2017

    An honorary degree from Chalmers

Chalmers University of Technology gives him an honorary degree in 2017 for his work co-developing circuit QED.

  8. Since 2024

    Sterling Professor of Physics

He becomes Sterling Professor of Physics in 2024, the highest academic honor bestowed upon a Yale faculty member. In March 2026 Yale News calls him Sterling Professor of Physics.
