Ryuji Hamamoto
Ryuji Hamamoto studies medical data and AI at the boundary between cancer research and clinical tools. As of October 2026, Hamamoto directed RIKEN’s AI Medical Engineering Team. His publications include work on retrieving glioma images in 2021, searching medical images using sketches in 2024, and analyzing lung cancer with multi-omics and clustering methods. The team works with medical institutions, particularly the National Cancer Center.
Timeline
-
2020–2022
Building clinical research tools
The National Cancer Center’s division developed AI support for endoscopic diagnosis and a medical AI development platform, commercialized with Fujifilm in April 2022. Hamamoto was part of the division.
-
2021
Searching brain images
Hamamoto coauthored a study on separating normal and abnormal features in medical images for content-based retrieval of glioma imaging. The work addresses finding useful image comparisons in the study of brain tumors.
-
2024
Retrieving images from sketches
His team published a shared study titled Sketch-based semantic retrieval of medical images. It adds a different way to search medical image collections.
-
2024
Analyzing cancer data
He coauthored multi-omics and clustering research on lung adenocarcinoma. The study sought disease mechanisms and possible treatment targets. Related shared work also examines ERBB2 gene overexpression in these tumors.
