Stephen Robertson
Also known as S E Robertson, Stephen E. Robertson
Stephen Robertson is an information retrieval researcher whose probabilistic models include BM25, a function for term weighting and document scoring. Born in 1946, he earned a first-class mathematics degree at Cambridge, worked at Aslib, and pursued retrieval-evaluation research at UCL. At City, he started the Centre for Interactive Systems Research and developed BM25 with Stephen Walker; later, he led Microsoft search research that contributed to Bing and served as a UCL Visiting Professor through 2023. He received the Gerard Salton Award, became an ACM Fellow, and published B C, Before Computers in 2020. As of October 2026, he is a Life Fellow at Girton College and Professor Emeritus at City University.

Timeline
-
1946–1973
Education and early information work
He is born in 1946, earns a first-class mathematics degree at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1967, and completes an information-science MSc at City University in 1968. He works as a research officer at Aslib from 1968 to 1973.
-
1973–1978
A research fellowship at UCL
At UCL, he receives a Royal Society Scientific Information Research Fellowship in 1973 and pursues a PhD on experimental evaluation of information retrieval systems.
-
1976
Probabilistic relevance weighting
With Karen Spärck Jones, he develops a probabilistic theory of relevance weighting in 1976.
-
1978–1998
City research, Okapi and BM25
He visits UC Berkeley as a visiting associate professor from April to June 1981. In 1987, he starts the Centre for Interactive Systems Research and heads Information Science from 1988 to 1996. With Stephen Walker, he develops BM25 for term weighting and document scoring; the centre uses Okapi for live and laboratory retrieval experiments.
-
1998–2023
Microsoft search and a book
He joins Microsoft Research Cambridge in 1998 and leads a group in information retrieval whose work contributes to Bing. From 2008 to 2023, he serves as a Visiting Professor at UCL. In 2020, he publishes B C, Before Computers: On Information Technology from Writing to the Age of Digital Data.
-
2000
A Gerard Salton Award
He receives the Gerard Salton Award from ACM SIGIR in 2000 for sustained contributions to the development, refinement, and evaluation of probabilistic retrieval models.
-
2013
An ACM Fellowship
He becomes a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2013.
-
As of October 2026
Professor emeritus and life fellow
He is a Life Fellow of Girton College and Professor Emeritus at City University.
