Stephen Wolfram

Stephen Wolfram is a computer scientist and physicist whose Wolfram|Alpha answer engine and writings on ChatGPT link computation to AI. After building the SMP computer algebra system, he received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1981. In 1987 he founded Wolfram Research, and in May 2009 he launched Wolfram|Alpha as an answer engine. His 2023 writing explained what ChatGPT does and how the chatbot could call Wolfram|Alpha for computation. As of October 2026, he is founder and CEO of Wolfram Research.

  1. 1979–1981

    Building the SMP computer algebra system

    Starting in 1979 he begins building SMP, a computer algebra system, and releases it commercially in 1981.

  2. 1981

    A MacArthur Fellowship

    He receives a MacArthur Fellowship in 1981 as a computer scientist and physicist.

  3. 1987–1988

    Founding Wolfram Research

    In 1987 he founds Wolfram Research, and in June 1988 the first version of Mathematica is released.

  4. 2002

    A new kind of science

    The book A New Kind of Science appears in 2002 as a 1200-page work on simple computational systems.

  5. May 2009

    Launching Wolfram|Alpha

    Wolfram|Alpha launches in May 2009 as an answer engine.

  6. February 2023–March 2023

    Connecting ChatGPT to Wolfram|Alpha

    In February 2023 he publishes an essay on what ChatGPT does and why it works. In March 2023 he posts "ChatGPT Gets Its Wolfram Superpowers," describing how the chatbot can call Wolfram|Alpha for computation.

  7. 2024–2025

    Minimal models of machine learning

    In August 2024 he publishes an essay on minimal models of machine learning. In October 2025 Wolfram Media publishes the book What's Really Going On in Machine Learning? Some Minimal Models.

  8. As of October 2026

    Running Wolfram Research

    He is founder and CEO of Wolfram Research, and he remains personally responsible for overseeing the functional design of Mathematica.
