Ryszard S. Michalski
Ryszard S. Michalski worked on the Illinois faculty from 1970 to 1987 and moved with his research group to George Mason in 1988. He lived from 1937 to 2007. Michalski developed the AQ algorithm for the general covering problem and subsequent learning programs. He also worked on constructive induction, conceptual clustering and variable-valued logic. Michalski and plant pathologist James Sinclair developed an agricultural expert system that learned decision rules from examples in 1977. Later work included an inferential theory of learning and the Learnable Evolution Model, which uses learning to guide evolution.
