Ruud M. Bolle
Ruud Bolle is a computer vision and biometrics researcher who worked at IBM. Born in Voorburg, the Netherlands, he joined IBM's AI Department in 1984 and managed the Exploratory Computer Vision Group from 1988 to 2003. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 1998, and the IEEE Computer Society gave him its 2000 Technical Achievement Award for building computer vision systems. In 2001, he, Nalini Ratha and Jonathan Connell proposed cancelable biometrics at IBM, and in 2004 he coauthored the book Guide to Biometrics. His research centered on biometrics, from large-scale search systems to the performance analysis of biometric systems.
Timeline
-
1984–2003
Leading IBM's computer vision group
Born in Voorburg, the Netherlands, he earns a bachelor's degree in analog electronics and a master's degree in electrical engineering at Delft University. He completes a master's degree in applied mathematics and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Brown University. In 1984, he joins the AI Department of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Center as a Research Staff Member, and from 1988 to 2003 he manages its Exploratory Computer Vision Group.
-
1989–1993
Object recognition papers
In 1989, he coauthors "Visual Recognition Using Concurrent and Layered Parameter Networks" at CVPR with Andrea Califano, Rick Kjeldsen and Russell W. Taylor. In 1993, he and Shree K. Nayar publish "Reflectance Ratio: A Photometric Invariant for Object Recognition" at ICCV.
-
1996
Editing a biometrics book
In 1996, he co-edits Biometrics: Personal Identification in Networked Society with Anil Jain and Sharath Pankanti.
-
1998
An IAPR Fellowship
In 1998, the International Association for Pattern Recognition makes him a Fellow for contributions to industrial computer vision and for service to IAPR.
-
2000
IEEE Technical Achievement Award
He receives the IEEE Computer Society's 2000 Technical Achievement Award, with a citation for technical contributions to, and leadership in, building computer vision systems with high scientific and practical value.
-
2001
Cancelable biometrics at IBM
In 2001, he, Nalini Ratha and Jonathan Connell, working in IBM's Exploratory Computer Vision Group, propose the first concrete idea of cancelable biometrics. Their IBM Systems Journal paper is titled "Enhancing security and privacy in biometrics-based authentication systems".
-
2004
Two Springer books on biometrics
In 2004, he and Nalini Ratha co-edit Automatic Fingerprint Recognition Systems, published by Springer in New York. The same publisher issues Guide to Biometrics, which he coauthors with Jonathan Connell, Sharath Pankanti, Nalini Ratha and Andrew Senior.
-
2005–2007
Biometrics research and editing
His research focuses entirely on biometrics, including large-scale search systems and performance analysis of biometric systems. In August 2005, he guest-edits the special issue on biometrics of IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part C, and he serves as Area Editor of Computer Vision and Image Understanding and Associate Editor of Pattern Recognition. In 2007, he coauthors "Anonymous and Revocable Fingerprint Recognition" at CVPR with Faisal Farooq, Tsai-Yang Jea and Nalini K. Ratha.
