Researcher

Pranav Rajpurkar

Pranav Rajpurkar is a computer scientist and Harvard biomedical informatics professor who builds AI for medical imaging and multimodal clinical care. He trained in computer science at Stanford, coauthored SQuAD, and helped develop CheXNet and CheXpert for medical imaging. His later work examines how AI systems work with clinicians, and he co-founded a radiology AI organization in 2024. SQuAD received the Association for Computational Linguistics' 2026 Test-of-Time Paper Award. As of October 2026, he is an associate professor of biomedical informatics at Harvard Medical School, leads the Rajpurkar Lab, and is a co-founder of a2z Radiology AI.

Timeline

  1. 2015–2021

    Stanford computer science degrees

He earns B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in computer science at Stanford in 2015, 2018, and 2021. As an undergraduate, he joins Andrew Ng's lab and works on artificial intelligence for autonomous driving.

  2. 2016

    The SQuAD dataset

In 2016, he coauthors SQuAD with Jian Zhang, Konstantin Lopyrev, and Percy Liang, a Stanford question-answering dataset of more than 100,000 questions drawn from Wikipedia articles.

  3. 2017

    CheXNet pneumonia detection

In 2017, as a graduate student in Stanford's Machine Learning Group, he co-leads CheXNet, a deep-learning algorithm for chest X-rays. The system outperforms four Stanford radiologists on pneumonia diagnosis.

  4. 2019

    The CheXpert dataset

In 2019, he coauthors CheXpert, a chest radiograph dataset with uncertainty labels. It contains 224,316 X-rays from 65,240 patients and becomes a public benchmark for medical imaging models.

  5. 2022

    Assistant professor at Harvard

In 2022, he is an assistant professor of biomedical informatics in the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School.

  6. 2022–2023

Forbes, Nature Medicine and MIT honors

In 2022, Forbes names him to 30 Under 30 in Science and Nature Medicine names him an Early-career Researcher to Watch. MIT Technology Review names him an Innovator Under 35 in 2023.

  7. 2024

    Co-founding a2z Radiology AI

In 2024, he co-founds a2z Radiology AI, aiming to develop AI that can detect disease at radiologist level.

  8. July 2025

    AI roles in radiology

In July 2025, he coauthors a Radiology editorial with Eric Topol on separating AI and radiologist roles. The authors outline AI-first, doctor-first, and case-allocation models for radiology work.

  9. 2026

    An ACL Test-of-Time Award

In 2026, the Association for Computational Linguistics gives SQuAD its Test-of-Time Paper Award. The paper, coauthored with Jian Zhang, Konstantin Lopyrev, and Percy Liang, gains recognition for its lasting influence on question-answering research.

  10. As of October 2026

    Associate professor at Harvard

As of October 2026, he is an associate professor of biomedical informatics at Harvard Medical School, leads the Rajpurkar Lab, and is a co-founder of a2z Radiology AI. The group develops medical AI across computer vision, natural language processing, and structured health data, and studies clinician-AI collaboration. Its work includes generalist models that read images and text and tie findings to evidence.
