Pope Leo XIV

Also known as Robert Francis Prevost, Papa León XIV

Pope Leo XIV is the 267th pope of the Catholic Church and the first Augustinian to hold the office. Born in Chicago in 1955, he graduated in mathematics from Villanova University in 1977 and led the Order of Saint Augustine as prior general from 2001 to 2013. He was bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023, then prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in Rome. He was elected pope in May 2025, and his address to the College of Cardinals linked artificial intelligence to new challenges for human dignity, justice and labour. TIME named him one of the world's top thinkers on artificial intelligence in its 2025 TIME100 AI list, and in May 2026 he published Magnifica humanitas, his first encyclical, on safeguarding the human person in the time of artificial intelligence.

    A mathematics degree at Villanova

    He is born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955 and graduates from Villanova University with a mathematics degree in 1977.

  2. 2001–2013

    Prior general of the Augustinians

    From 2001 to 2013, he leads the Order of Saint Augustine as prior general, across two six-year terms.

  3. 2015–2023

    Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru

    Pope Francis appoints him Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, in 2015, and he serves there until 2023.

  4. 2023

    Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops

    In January 2023, the Pope calls him to Rome as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. In September 2023, he is elevated to the College of Cardinals.

  5. May 2025

    Elected pope, addressing AI

    He is elected pope in May 2025, and his address to the College of Cardinals ties artificial intelligence to new challenges for human dignity, justice and labour.

  6. 2025

    A TIME100 AI thinker

    TIME names him one of the world's top thinkers on artificial intelligence in its 2025 TIME100 AI list.

  7. May 2026

    A first encyclical on AI

    In May 2026, he publishes his first encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, on safeguarding the human person in the time of artificial intelligence.
