Researcher

Parvin Mousavi

Parvin Mousavi is a computer scientist at Queen's University whose research applies machine learning to medical diagnosis and computer-assisted interventions, including the earlier diagnosis of cancer. She earned an MSc at Imperial College and a PhD at the University of British Columbia, and received the Canadian Association for Computer Science's Outstanding Young Computer Science Researcher Prize for 2010. The Royal Society of Canada elected her to its College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in 2016, IEEE Canada gave her its Gotlieb Computer Award in 2019, and she became a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at the Vector Institute in 2022. In 2024, she was named a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Medical Informatics. She is a professor in Queen's School of Computing and holds both chairs.

Timeline

  1. By 2010

Imperial College, UBC and a prize

She earns an MSc at Imperial College in the UK and a PhD at the University of British Columbia. The Canadian Association for Computer Science selects her, a professor in Queen's School of Computing, for its Outstanding Young Computer Science Researcher Prize for 2010.

  2. 2016

    Royal Society of Canada election

In 2016, the Royal Society of Canada elects her to its College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, one of five Queen's faculty members named to the program. The honour recognizes her work on precise management of complex human disease and personalized computer-assisted diagnosis and therapy, which uses machine learning on medical images and omics profiling.

  3. 2017–2020

    General chair of IPCAI

She is general chair of the conference on Information Processing in Computer Assisted Interventions (IPCAI) from 2017 to 2020. From 2020, she sits on its steering committee and board.

  4. 2019

    IEEE Canada's Gotlieb Computer Award

In 2019, IEEE Canada gives her the Gotlieb Computer Award for contributions to computer engineering and science. As director of Queen's Medical Informatics Laboratory, she combines machine learning with medical images, bio-signals and genomic markers to support earlier and more accurate diagnosis of cancer.

  5. 2021–2023

    MICCAI fellow and program co-chair

She is named a fellow of Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions (MICCAI) in 2021. In 2023, she serves as a program co-chair of MICCAI.

  6. 2022

    A Canada CIFAR AI Chair

In 2022, she is named a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at the Vector Institute, one of seven researchers in the new cohort whose positions are affiliated with the institute. She also leads the multi-institutional NSERC CREATE Training program in Medical Informatics at Queen's, which links machine learning and digital health.

  7. November 2024

Canada Research Chair in Medical Informatics

In November 2024, she is among the 224 Canada Research Chairs announced across the country, named a Tier 1 chair in Medical Informatics. The chair applies AI advances to disease diagnosis, medical interventions and personalized treatments.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Queen's University

As of October 2026, she is a professor in Queen's School of Computing, a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at the Vector Institute and Canada Research Chair in Medical Informatics. In February 2025, Queen's features her among five women researchers using AI to improve healthcare, with a focus on AI solutions for computer-assisted surgery and medical interventions. She previously held a senior scientist position at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and visiting professorships at Harvard Medical School and the University of British Columbia.
