Researcher

Nicholas Teh

Nicholas Teh is a computer scientist whose work spans computational social choice, algorithmic game theory, and AI alignment. He earned undergraduate degrees in computer science and applied mathematics at the National University of Singapore and completed an Oxford DPhil under Edith Elkind. His research includes a 2022 study of collective decisions under voter uncertainty and a 2024 framework for fairness in repeated multiwinner elections. He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Oxford from 2025 to 2026 on collective decision-making for AI safety. Since September 2026, he is a Departmental Lecturer in Oxford's Department of Computer Science.

Timeline

  1. 2017–2021

    Degrees at NUS

He earns undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at the National University of Singapore from 2017 to 2021, working with Yair Zick, Jonathan Scarlett, and Harold Soh.

  2. 2021–2025

    An Oxford DPhil

From 2021 to 2025, he completes a DPhil in Computer Science at the University of Oxford under Edith Elkind's supervision.

  3. 2022

    Collective decisions under uncertainty

At IJCAI 2022, he coauthors “Better Collective Decisions via Uncertainty Reduction” with Shiri Alouf-Heffetz, Laurent Bulteau, Edith Elkind, and Nimrod Talmon. The paper studies computational interventions for collective decisions when voters are uncertain. Its analysis reports NP-hardness and fixed-parameter tractability results for the decision problems.

  4. 2024

    Fairness in repeated voting

At AAAI 2024, he coauthors “Temporal Fairness in Multiwinner Voting” with Edith Elkind and Svetlana Obraztsova. The paper sets out a unified framework for examining fairness across repeated elections.

  5. 2025–2026

    AI safety postdoc at Oxford

From 2025 to 2026, he serves as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Oxford, advised by Paul Goldberg, and works on collective decision-making for AI safety through ARIA's ASPAI project.

  6. Since September 2026

    Departmental Lecturer at Oxford

In September 2026, he becomes a Departmental Lecturer in the University of Oxford's Department of Computer Science. He is a faculty member in Oxford's computational social choice group, which studies voting from computer science and artificial intelligence perspectives. His stated interests include algorithmic game theory, computational social choice, and AI alignment.
