Narges Norouzi
Narges Norouzi is an Associate Teaching Professor at UC Berkeley whose group builds AI systems that model how people and machines learn, teach and coordinate. She earned a computer engineering bachelor’s degree at Sharif University of Technology in 2012, a master’s degree at the University of Toronto in 2014 and a Toronto PhD in 2017. After teaching at UC Santa Cruz in 2017–2018, she was an assistant teaching professor at Berkeley by 2023. Her research included FEDD, a 2023 framework for skin image analysis, and Search Arena, a 2025 study of language models that use web search. With John DeNero, she developed Askademia, which answered lecture questions in Berkeley courses in 2025; since July 2025, she is also Associate Dean of Students in Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society.

Timeline
-
2012
Computer engineering at Sharif
She earns a BSc in computer engineering at Sharif University of Technology in 2012. Her undergraduate thesis studies dress mapping on a body from four points of view using 3D computer vision.
-
2014–2017
Graduate study at Toronto
In the University of Toronto’s Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, she earns a master’s degree in 2014 and a PhD in 2017. Her doctoral thesis, supervised by Parham Aarabi, studies time-frequency analysis of alcohol withdrawal tremors.
-
2017–2018
Teaching at Santa Cruz
In the 2017–2018 academic year, she teaches Intermediate Programming and Artificial Intelligence at UC Santa Cruz’s Baskin School of Engineering.
-
By 2023
Assistant teaching professor at Berkeley
By 2023, she is an assistant teaching professor at UC Berkeley, after a faculty post at UC Santa Cruz’s Baskin School of Engineering.
-
2023
FEDD for skin images
In 2023, she and Héctor Carrión coauthor FEDD, a diffusion-based framework for skin lesion segmentation and malignancy classification. It uses features learned by a denoising diffusion model to analyze dermatology images.
-
July 2024
Associate teaching professor at Berkeley
She becomes an Associate Teaching Professor in Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, with the promotion effective from July 2024. The promotion is announced in June 2025.
-
January 2025
Language models for personalized learning
In January 2025, her project on advanced student modeling and tailored large language models for personalized learning in computer science education receives a $600,000 award from the National Science Foundation. The project runs from January 2025 to January 2028.
-
June 2025
Search Arena for language models
In June 2025, she coauthors Search Arena: Analyzing Search-Augmented LLMs. The work introduces a dataset of more than 24,000 paired, multi-turn user interactions with language models that use web search, including human preference votes and system traces.

2025
Askademia answers lecture questions
With John DeNero, she develops Askademia, a system that answers student questions during live lectures and recorded viewing using lecture audio, slides and course materials. In fall 2025, it runs in Berkeley’s CS 189 and Data 100 courses and answers an average of 1,000 student questions each week.

As of October 2026
Faculty and student leadership
As of October 2026, she is an Associate Teaching Professor in UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Associate Dean of Students in its College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, a role she takes up in July 2025. The Norouzi Group studies how humans and machines learn, teach and coordinate, and builds AI systems that model or improve these processes.
