Max Tegmark

Max Tegmark is a physicist whose AI work spans safety research, policy advocacy and writing about AI futures. His studies moved from economics and physics in Sweden to graduate work at Berkeley, followed by research and faculty posts in Munich, Princeton and Pennsylvania before he joined MIT in 2004. At the Future of Life Institute, he reported on an early AI safety grant round and led a call to pause advanced AI training; his book Life 3.0 explores how AI could affect society. As of October 2026, he is an MIT professor and FLI's Founder and Chair, with recent research on mechanistic interpretability and guaranteed safe AI.

Timeline

  1. 1989–1994

    From Stockholm to Berkeley

After earning a B.A. in economics at Stockholm School of Economics in 1989 and a B.Sc. in physics at the Royal Institute of Technology in 1990, he completes an M.A. and Ph.D. in physics at Berkeley in 1992 and 1994.

  2. 1994–2004

    Posts across two continents

After a research associate post at Max Planck in Munich, he becomes a Hubble Fellow and member of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. He later joins Penn as an assistant professor, receives tenure in 2003, and arrives at MIT in September 2004.

  3. May 2014

    Founding the Future of Life

He co-founds the Future of Life Institute, which launches at MIT in May 2014.

  4. 2015

    A prize for public science

KTH awards him its Great Prize for his work as a scientist and communicator on the universe and physics.

  5. March 2015

    Opening an AI grant round

His update on FLI's AI-benefit grant round reports about 300 applications worth roughly $100 million.

  6. August 2017

    Writing about AI's future

Life 3.0 appears as an ebook in August 2017 and examines how AI could affect crime, war, jobs, society and human life.

  7. 2023

    Calling for an AI pause

He leads FLI's open letter calling for a six-month pause on training advanced AI systems. Time names him one of its 100 Most Influential People in AI for 2023.

  8. As of October 2026

    Researching safe intelligence

He is an MIT professor working on AI and physics, and FLI's Founder and Chair. His recent AI safety research focuses on mechanistic interpretability and guaranteed safe AI, and he also studies news-bias detection with machine learning.
