Mathieu Even
Mathieu Even is a machine learning researcher at Inria Montpellier whose work covers decentralized optimization, privacy and causal inference for medicine. He studied mathematics and physics at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris and completed a PhD at Inria Paris and ENS Paris under Laurent Massoulié in 2024. His 2021 paper on continuized accelerations of gradient descents and gossip algorithms, written with Raphaël Berthier, Francis Bach and others, received a NeurIPS 2021 Outstanding Paper award, and his thesis earned an accessit to the 2024 Gilles Kahn prize. After a postdoc in the Premedical team from October 2024, he joined Inria Montpellier as a researcher in October 2025, and he works there on causal inference, machine learning and privacy in a medical context.

Timeline
-
2017–2021
Studies at ENS Paris
He studies mathematics and physics at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris from 2017 to 2021. In 2020, he completes a master's program in probability and statistics at Université d'Orsay/Paris-Saclay.
-
2021
A NeurIPS Outstanding Paper
In 2021, he coauthors "Continuized Accelerations of Deterministic and Stochastic Gradient Descents, and of Gossip Algorithms" with Raphaël Berthier, Francis Bach, Nicolas Flammarion, Pierre Gaillard, Hadrien Hendrikx, Laurent Massoulié and Adrien Taylor, and it receives a NeurIPS 2021 Outstanding Paper award. The paper introduces a continuized variant of Nesterov acceleration and gives the first rigorous acceleration of asynchronous gossip algorithms.
-
2021–2024
PhD under Laurent Massoulié
He is a PhD student at Inria Paris and ENS Paris from September 2021 to June 2024, working on the theory and algorithms of machine learning under Laurent Massoulié. His thesis, "Towards Decentralization, Asynchrony, Privacy and Personalization in Federated Learning," is carried out in the Argo team.
-
2022
Asynchronous SGD under delays
In 2022, he coauthors "Asynchronous SGD Beats Minibatch SGD Under Arbitrary Delays" at NeurIPS with Konstantin Mishchenko, Francis Bach and Blake Woodworth. The paper proves guarantees for asynchronous SGD that depend on the number of parallel devices used, whatever the size of the delays in the gradients.
-
2024
Asynchronous speedup in decentralized optimization
In 2024, his paper with Hadrien Hendrikx and Laurent Massoulié appears in IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. It analyzes asynchronous algorithms in networks with heterogeneous delays, with a convergence rate controlled by the eigengap of the network graph weighted by local delays.
-
2024
Gilles Kahn thesis prize accessit
He receives an accessit in the 2024 Gilles Kahn thesis prize of the Société Informatique de France for his PhD thesis on federated learning.
-
October 2024–September 2025
Postdoc in the Premedical team
From October 2024 to September 2025, he is a postdoc in the Premedical team at Inria Montpellier.

Since October 2025
Researcher at Inria Montpellier
He becomes a researcher (chargé de recherche) at Inria Montpellier in October 2025, in the Premedical team, working on causal inference, machine learning and privacy in a medical context. He also works with the startup Theremia Health.
