Laveen N. Kanal
Laveen N. Kanal researched pattern recognition, heuristic search and computational intelligence. He earned a Pennsylvania doctorate in 1960. He served on Maryland’s faculty from July 1970 until retiring in December 1995, and a colleague described working with him on ISPAHAN statistical recognition software. He received the IAPR King-Sun Fu Award and AAAI fellowship in 1992. His research interests included image understanding and intelligent tutoring. Maryland held a remembrance event in September 2024.

Timeline
-
1960
Doctoral education
Kanal earned a University of Pennsylvania doctorate in 1960 and a Washington electrical-engineering master’s degree. His later research interests included computational intelligence for image understanding and intelligent tutoring.

1970–1995
A Maryland research career
Kanal joined Maryland in July 1970 and retired from full-time faculty work in December 1995. He researched pattern recognition and continued participating in the department after retirement.
-
1992
Recognition for pattern research
AAAI elected Kanal a Fellow in 1992. He also received the 1992 IAPR King-Sun Fu Award. AAAI cited his work in pattern recognition and heuristic search. The two honors complement a research career concerned with machine recognition of patterns.

2006 and 2024
A research and mentoring legacy
Kanal worked with a colleague on the ISPAHAN statistical pattern-recognition package. Maryland later organized a September 2024 remembrance event.
