Laurie E. Locascio

Also known as Laurie Locascio

As of October 2026, she is president and CEO of the American National Standards Institute. She led NIST from 2022 to 2024, and during her tenure she oversaw efforts to set up the AI Safety Institute. Earlier, she spent 31 years at NIST, starting in 1986 as a research biomedical engineer. In July 2024 she and Roberto Viola opened a technical dialogue between the European AI Office and the AI Safety Institute. In October 2024 the ANSI board chose her as its next president and CEO, with the job starting in January 2025.

  1. 1979–1986

    Chemistry and bioengineering degrees

    From 1979 to 1983 she studies at James Madison University, where she earns a B.Sc. in chemistry. She also completes an M.Sc. in bioengineering at the University of Utah.

  2. 1986–1999

    Research biomedical engineer at NIST

    From 1986 to 1999 she works as a research biomedical engineer at NIST. She completes a toxicology PhD at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

  3. 2017

    Earle B. Barnes leadership award

    In 2017 the American Chemical Society gives her the Earle B. Barnes Award for Leadership in Chemical Research Management.

  4. 2017–2021

    Vice president for research

    After 31 years at NIST, she serves as vice president for research at the University of Maryland from 2017 to 2021.

  5. 2022–2024

    Director of NIST

    In April 2022 she is sworn in as NIST director. During her tenure she oversees key efforts to set up the U.S. AI Safety Institute.

  6. July 2024

    Talks with the EU AI Office

    In July 2024 she and Roberto Viola initiate a technical dialogue between the European AI Office and the U.S. AI Safety Institute.

  7. October 2024

    Chosen as ANSI's next CEO

    In October 2024 the ANSI board elects her as its next president and CEO, with the job starting in January 2025.

  8. As of October 2026

    President and CEO of ANSI

    In 2026 she is president and CEO of the American National Standards Institute.
