Julien Chaumond is a co-founder and CTO of Hugging Face, which grew from an AI chatbot into a shared platform for models and datasets. He studied at École Polytechnique and researched databases at Stanford before co-founding Glose, working at Stupeflix and France's Ministry of Finance, and co-founding Hugging Face in 2016. He co-authored the Transformers and Datasets papers and helped plan new storage for the Hugging Face Hub. In April 2025, Hugging Face acquired Pollen Robotics, a builder of open-source robots; he is CTO as of October 2026.

  1. 2003

    Database research at Stanford

    He enters École Polytechnique in 2003, then goes to Stanford for database research.

  2. 2013

    Co-founding Glose

    In 2013, he leaves Télécom to co-found Glose in New York. After returning to Paris, he works at Stupeflix.

  3. 2016

    Starting as an AI chatbot

    After time at France's Ministry of Finance, he co-founds Hugging Face with Clément Delangue and Thomas Wolf in 2016. The company begins as an AI chatbot.

  4. 2018–2019

    Building the Transformers library

    Hugging Face builds a PyTorch replica of the Transformer model and creates the Transformers library in 2018 and 2019. Chaumond co-authors the 2019 paper, which describes an open-source library with a unified API and curated pretrained models.

  5. 2021

    A library for NLP datasets

    He co-authors the 2021 Datasets paper, which presents a community library for NLP and aims to standardize dataset interfaces, versioning, and documentation.

  6. August 2024

    Updating Hub storage

    In August 2024, Hugging Face acquires XetHub to improve storage for Hub datasets and models. As CTO, Chaumond says the team will switch the Hub to a better LFS backend.

  7. April 2025

    Expanding into open robotics

    In April 2025, Hugging Face acquires Pollen Robotics, whose team builds open-source robots and hardware.

    As of October 2026, he is CTO of Hugging Face.
