Researcher

Julian Schrittwieser

Also known as Mononofu

Julian Schrittwieser is an AI researcher at Anthropic, where he joined in 2024 after leaving Google DeepMind. At DeepMind, he and his team built AlphaGo Zero, which defeated AlphaGo 100 games to zero in October 2017. The Innovators Under 35 list honored him in 2018. A 2020 Nature paper that presents MuZero lists him as a co-author. AlphaProof, whose system solved three of five non-geometry problems at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad, appears in a paper he co-authored.

Timeline

  1. 2013

    A software engineering degree

Vienna University of Technology awards him a B.Sc. in software engineering in 2013.

  2. 2016

    Co-authoring the AlphaGo paper

In 2016, Nature publishes the paper 'Mastering the game of Go with deep neural networks and tree search', which he co-authors.

  3. 2017

    AlphaGo Zero beats AlphaGo

He and his team build AlphaGo Zero, which defeats AlphaGo 100 games to zero in October 2017. Three authors, including him, contribute equally to the Nature paper that describes it.

  4. 2018

    Named to Innovators Under 35

The Innovators Under 35 list honors him in 2018.

  5. 2020

    Co-authoring the MuZero paper

The Nature paper that presents MuZero, published in 2020, lists him as a co-author.

  6. 2024

    AlphaProof at the Olympiad

AlphaProof, whose system solves three of five non-geometry problems at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad, appears in a paper he co-authors.

  7. Since 2024

    Moving from DeepMind to Anthropic

He leaves Google DeepMind for Anthropic in 2024, and he is an AI researcher there.
