Johannes C. Paetzold

Also known as Johannes Christian Paetzold

Johannes C. Paetzold is a computer scientist whose research applies deep learning and geometric methods to medical imaging. He earned engineering science and electrical engineering degrees at the Technical University of Munich in 2016 and 2018, then completed a computer science PhD there in 2023. His work includes VesSAP for brain vasculature analysis, the VerSe benchmark for vertebra labeling, and a geometry-aware neural solver for brain tumor models. Since 2025, he is an Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence in Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine, following research roles at Imperial College London and Helmholtz Zentrum München; by October 2026, he also holds a Cornell Tech co-affiliation.

Timeline

  1. 2016–2018

    Engineering degrees at TUM

He earns a BSc in Engineering Science at the Technical University of Munich in 2016 and an MSc in Electrical Engineering there in 2018.

  2. 2020

    VesSAP for brain vasculature

He coauthors VesSAP in 2020, a deep learning framework for brain vasculature analysis that uses a convolutional neural network and transfer learning to segment vessels at human-level accuracy.

  3. 2021

    The VerSe benchmark

In 2021, he coauthors the VerSe benchmark for vertebra labeling and segmentation in CT scans. The project prepares 374 scans from 355 patients and annotates 4,505 vertebrae at voxel level.

  4. 2022

    A brain tumor model solver

In 2022, he coauthors a geometry-aware neural solver that maps tumor-model parameters to local cell-density simulations while respecting patient anatomy.

  5. 2023

    A computer science PhD

He completes a PhD in Computer Science at the Technical University of Munich in 2023.

  6. Since 2025

    Assistant Professor at Cornell

He joins Weill Cornell Medicine in 2025 as an Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence in Radiology. Before Cornell, he works as a postdoctoral researcher in Imperial College London's Department of Computing and serves as AI Team Leader at the Institute for Intelligent Biotechnologies (iBIO), Helmholtz Zentrum München. By October 2026, he holds a Cornell Tech co-affiliation and focuses on computer vision and medical image analysis through geometric and topological deep learning.
