Jens Lehmann
Jens Lehmann is a computer scientist whose AI research connects knowledge graphs, machine learning and conversational systems. He helped build DBpedia and developed DL-Learner, then led knowledge-engineering research in Leipzig and conversational AI work at Fraunhofer IAIS. ELLIS elected him a Fellow in 2020, and his LinkedGeoData paper received the Semantic Web Journal's 10 Year Best Paper Award in 2022. He received the 2025 AMiner Most Influential Scholar Award for Knowledge Engineering. As of October 2026, he is a principal scientist in Amazon AGI, where he works on large language models, conversational AI and knowledge graphs.
Timeline
-
2006–2010
A computer science foundation
He earned a computer-science master's degree at TU Dresden and the University of Bristol in 2006, then completed a summa cum laude doctorate at Leipzig in 2010. In 2007, he and Sören Auer started DBpedia. His 2009 paper introduced DL-Learner, a framework for learning in description logics.
-
2010–2015
A Leipzig research group
He led a research group at Leipzig from 2010 and headed the Research Center for Agile Knowledge Engineering and Semantic Web (AKSW) from 2013 to 2015.
-
2019–2022
Conversational AI in Dresden
At Fraunhofer IAIS, he led about 40 researchers. From 2019 to 2022, he led the Dresden branch, where his group focused on conversational AI systems for business.
-
2020
An ELLIS fellowship
He was elected an ELLIS Fellow in 2020.
-
2022
A move to Amazon
In May 2022, he left his W3 professorship at Bonn for a new position at Amazon; in June, he joined as an Alexa AI principal scientist. TU Dresden welcomed him as an honorary professor in October 2022.
-
2022
An award for LinkedGeoData
His LinkedGeoData paper received the Semantic Web Journal's 10 Year Best Paper Award in 2022.
-
2025
Recognized in knowledge engineering
He received the 2025 AMiner Most Influential Scholar Award for Knowledge Engineering.
-
As of October 2026
Amazon AGI research
As of October 2026, he is a principal scientist in Amazon's AGI organization, where he works on large language models, conversational AI and knowledge graphs.
