Researcher

Jason Klusowski

Also known as Jason M. Klusowski

Jason Klusowski is a Princeton operations researcher whose work connects statistical learning, decision trees and language-model decoding. He grew up in Winnipeg, earned a statistics and mathematics degree at Manitoba and a doctorate in statistics and data science at Yale, then served as an assistant professor at Rutgers before joining Princeton. In 2020, he authored Sparse Learning with CART, which studies regression trees; in 2025, he coauthored Decoding Game, a theory of text generation with language models. He received an NSF CAREER award and Princeton’s Wentz Junior Faculty Award in 2023 and a Sloan Research Fellowship in mathematics in 2025. Since July 2026, he is an associate professor with tenure in Princeton’s Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering.

Timeline

  1. By 2019

    Manitoba, Yale and Rutgers

Raised in Winnipeg, he earns a B.S. (hons.) in statistics and mathematics from the University of Manitoba in 2013 and a Ph.D. in statistics and data science from Yale in 2018. By 2019, he is an assistant professor in Rutgers’ Department of Statistics, where he studies statistical learning and network analysis.

  2. 2020

    Sparse Learning with CART

In 2020, he authors Sparse Learning with CART, which studies the statistical properties of regression trees built with CART. The paper finds that CART with cost-complexity pruning achieves an optimal complexity/goodness-of-fit tradeoff when tree depth scales with the logarithm of the sample size.

  3. 2023

    An NSF CAREER award

He receives an NSF CAREER award in 2023 for his project, Statistical learning with recursive partitioning: Algorithms, accuracy and applications.

  4. 2023

    Howard B. Wentz award

In 2023, he receives Princeton Engineering’s Howard B. Wentz, Jr. Junior Faculty Award.

  5. 2025

    A Sloan Research Fellowship

He receives a Sloan Research Fellowship in mathematics in 2025.

  6. 2025

    Decoding Game for language models

With Sijin Chen and Omar Hagrass, he coauthors Decoding Game in 2025, a zero-sum framework for language-model text generation. It shows that truncation-normalization methods are first-order approximations to the optimal strategy under the game’s implicit regularization.

  7. Since July 2026

    Associate professor at Princeton

After Rutgers, he joins Princeton’s Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering. He becomes an associate professor with tenure there, effective July 1, 2026.
