Lab leader

James R. Lee

James R. Lee is a computer scientist and OpenAI research lead whose current work covers language models and reasoning. He coauthored the 2004 measured descent paper, earned degrees at Purdue and Berkeley, and worked at the Institute for Advanced Study before joining the University of Washington faculty in 2006. At UW, he became a professor of computer science and published 2023 work showing that Euclidean and metric growth exponents coincide in reversible random networks. After coauthoring Phi-4 at Microsoft in 2024, he joined OpenAI in December 2024 and became Research Lead for Reasoning in April 2025; he leads core STEM and SWE reasoning and has helped build o3, GPT-4.1, and GPT-5.

Timeline

  1. 1997–2006

    Degrees and measured descent

He earns an honors BS in mathematics and computer science at Purdue from 1997 to 2001, then a computer science PhD at Berkeley in 2005 under advisor Christos H. Papadimitriou. In 2004, he coauthors measured descent, a method for embedding finite metric spaces, with Robert Krauthgamer, Manor Mendel, and Assaf Naor. He works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from August 2005 to September 2006, then joins UW's faculty in 2006.

  2. 2006–2025

Professor of computer science at UW

By 2010, he is an assistant professor of computer science at UW, whose interests span algorithms, complexity theory, analysis, geometry, and probability. His computer science faculty appointment runs from September 2006 to September 2025; he serves as associate professor from September 2011 to August 2016 and as professor of computer science.

  3. 2017–2026

    Simons Investigator

He holds a Simons Investigator appointment from 2017 through 2026.

  4. 2023

    Growth exponents in networks

In 2023, he publishes work on reversible random networks showing that the Euclidean growth exponent coincides with the metric growth exponent.

  5. April 2024–November 2024

    Technical staff at Microsoft AI

He works as a Member of Technical Staff at Microsoft AI from April 2024 to November 2024.

  6. December 2024

    Phi-4 technical report

In December 2024, he coauthors Microsoft's Phi-4 technical report, which presents a 14-billion-parameter language model developed with a training recipe focused on data quality.

  7. December 2024–March 2025

    Researcher in OpenAI Foundations

At OpenAI, he serves as a Researcher in Foundations from December 2024 to March 2025.

  8. Since April 2025

    OpenAI reasoning research lead

He becomes OpenAI's Research Lead for Reasoning in April 2025 and leads its core STEM and SWE reasoning capabilities. He builds language models and helps build o3, GPT-4.1, and the GPT-5 model series.
