Researcher

J. Christopher Beck

J. Christopher Beck researches scheduling and combinatorial optimization through AI and operations-research methods. Before joining Toronto in August 2004, he worked on ILOG’s scheduler team and at the Cork Constraint Computation Centre. His research covers constraint programming, heuristic search, planning and mathematical programming. He has led the ICAPS executive council and the Association for Constraint Programming and served in AI journal editing. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 2025. He also held research visits at European institutions.

Timeline

  1. 1999–2004

    Industrial and institute research

Beck earned his Toronto doctorate in computer science in 1999. He worked as a senior scientist and software engineer at ILOG from 1999 to 2002, then as a staff scientist at Cork from 2002 to 2004. These roles involved scheduling and constraint computation.

  2. 2004

    A Toronto research program

Beck joined Toronto’s mechanical and industrial engineering department in August 2004. He develops methods for difficult combinatorial optimization problems using constraint programming, planning, heuristic search, dynamic programming and mathematical programming. The work combines AI methods with operations research.

  3. 2014–2024

    Research-community leadership

Beck served as ICAPS executive-council president from 2014 to 2016. He served as president of the Association for Constraint Programming from 2021 to 2022 and as past president from 2023 to 2024. He became editor-in-chief of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research in 2024.

  4. 2025

    AAAI recognition

AAAI elected Beck a Fellow in 2025 for work on planning, scheduling, constraint programming and the integration of AI with operations research. He visited TU Delft in 2024 and Basel in 2025 for research.
