Researcher

Howie Choset

Howie Choset researches robot design, motion planning and estimation. His group develops articulated robots and planning methods for complex physical environments. Choset’s work at CMU includes snake robots that use their shape and many joints to reach constrained spaces. Applications include search and rescue, manufacturing and research on minimally invasive surgery. His work includes motion planners that coordinate internal joints to produce locomotion. Choset and Jeff Schneider studied multi-objective learning for gait parameters. With Chao Cao, Hongbiao Zhu and Ji Zhang, Choset co-authored TARE at RSS 2021. TARE uses a hierarchical framework for efficient exploration of complex 3D environments.
