Howard E. Shrobe
Howard E. Shrobe applies AI reasoning to computing systems, including models of attacks and support for human teams. Shrobe joined MIT’s research staff in 1978 and initially worked on computing systems and AI. He served as technical director and technology vice president at Symbolics from 1982 to 1992. Shrobe joined DARPA in April 2022 to develop programs in computing systems, cybersecurity and AI. He also served on earlier DARPA program manager tours.

Research and industrial systems
Shrobe joined MIT’s research staff in 1978 and initially worked on computing systems and AI. He served as technical director and technology vice president at Symbolics from 1982 to 1992.

Modeling attack plans
Shrobe and his team built Attack Planner to model possible attacker strategies. Attack Planner uses planning and reasoning to help audit routes through a computing system.

Symbolic monitoring and team support
Monitors compare a running system with a symbolic model of permitted behavior. Shrobe worked with CSAIL and DOLL Labs on ASIST agents that model human intentions and help teams. These are distinct examples of reasoning applied to systems and interaction.

A new DARPA program role
Shrobe joined DARPA in April 2022 to develop programs in computing systems, cybersecurity and AI. He also served on earlier DARPA program manager tours.
