Helen King

Helen King is a computer scientist whose career spans AI research systems and responsible AI governance. At Google DeepMind, she contributed to DeepMind Lab, parallel WaveNet and the Generative Query Network, work that supports agent research, speech synthesis and scene learning. In 2024, she coauthored research on advanced AI assistants and DeepMind’s Frontier Safety Framework, then joined Partnership on AI’s board in August 2025. As of October 2026, she is Google DeepMind’s Vice President of Responsibility, and her work includes a toolkit for measuring harmful AI manipulation.

Timeline

  1. 2016

    DeepMind Lab

In 2016, she coauthors DeepMind Lab, a first-person 3D game platform designed for research and development of general AI and machine-learning systems.

  2. 2017

    Parallel WaveNet for speech synthesis

In 2017, she contributes to DeepMind’s parallel WaveNet work, a speech-synthesis model used to generate realistic-sounding Google Assistant voices in Japanese and US English.

  3. 2018

    Generative Query Network

In June 2018, she contributes to DeepMind’s Generative Query Network, which learns about a scene from an agent’s observations and predicts the scene from a new viewpoint.

  4. April 2024

    The ethics of AI assistants

In April 2024, she coauthors a paper that maps safety, alignment, misuse and societal questions raised by advanced AI assistants.

  5. May 2024

    Frontier Safety Framework

In May 2024, she coauthors Google DeepMind’s Frontier Safety Framework, a set of protocols to identify future AI capabilities that could cause severe harm and detect and mitigate those risks.

  6. August 2025

    Partnership on AI board

In August 2025, she joins Partnership on AI’s Board of Directors. A computer scientist with gaming-industry experience, she serves as Google DeepMind’s Vice President of Responsibility and sets its strategy for developing and deploying AI responsibly.

  7. March 2026

    Testing AI manipulation

In March 2026, she publishes findings on harmful AI manipulation and releases an empirically validated toolkit to measure it in human-participant studies.

  8. As of October 2026

    Vice President of Responsibility

In 2026, she appears on the byline of Google’s Responsible AI Progress Report, which describes testing and mitigation processes for more capable AI products. As of October 2026, she is Google DeepMind’s Vice President of Responsibility and co-chairs its Responsibility and Safety Council, which evaluates research, projects and collaborations against Google’s AI Principles.
