Gopala Krishna Anumanchipalli
Gopala Krishna Anumanchipalli is a UC Berkeley associate professor who develops AI for speech and brain-computer interfaces. His work connects speech science with systems that help people who have lost the ability to speak. He coauthored studies that turned brain activity into speech in 2019, decoded words in 2021, and controlled speech and a digital avatar in 2023. In 2025, he co-led a study that streamed a paralyzed participant’s intended speech into a voice synthesizer. He leads the Berkeley Speech Group.

Timeline
-
By 2008
Computer science at IIIT Hyderabad
He grows up in India. By 2008, he earns a B.Tech and an MS in computer science from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, with honours in AI.
-
2013
Doctorates in speech technology
In 2013, he earns a PhD in Language and Information Technologies from Carnegie Mellon University and a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. He studies at Carnegie Mellon’s Language Technologies Institute in the School of Computer Science and at INESC-ID in Lisbon, advised by Alan Black and Luis Caldas de Oliveira.
-
By 2013
Speech neuroscience at UCSF
By October 2013, he is a postdoctoral scholar in UCSF’s Department of Neurological Surgery. He works with neurosurgeon Edward Chang on how the brain produces speech.
-
2019
Speech from brain recordings
In 2019, he coauthors a Nature study that synthesizes speech from brain activity recorded in people with epilepsy. The work tests a way to convert neural recordings into audible speech.
-
2021
Joining Berkeley EECS
In 2021, he joins UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences after postdoctoral training and a full researcher role in UCSF’s Department of Neurosurgery. He also holds an adjunct appointment in that UCSF department.
-
2021
Decoding words after paralysis
In 2021, he coauthors “Neuroprosthesis for Decoding Speech in a Paralyzed Person with Anarthria” in the New England Journal of Medicine. The work decodes words and sentences from the brain activity of a person unable to speak.
-
August 2023
Speech and a digital avatar
In August 2023, he coauthors a Nature study of an implanted AI system that converts brain signals into speech and facial expressions. A woman who lost speech after a stroke uses the system to communicate through a talking digital avatar.
-
2025
Streaming brain signals into speech
In 2025, he co-leads a Nature Neuroscience study that uses AI to stream brain signals into audible speech in near real time. The system uses a participant’s voice from before her injury and produces its first sound within one second of her intent to speak.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and speech group leader
As of October 2026, he is the Robert E. and Beverly A. Brooks Associate Professor in UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, with an affiliation at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute. He leads the Berkeley Speech Group, part of Berkeley AI Research. At UCSF, he is an assistant professor with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Neurological Surgery.
