Gérard Ben Arous
Also known as Gerard Ben Arous
Gérard Ben Arous is a French mathematician whose work on probability theory includes a NeurIPS 2022 Outstanding Paper on stochastic gradient descent. He became a professor at NYU's Courant Institute in 2002 and directed the institute from 2011 to 2016. Reza Gheissari and Aukosh Jagannath co-wrote that paper with him, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences elected him in 2015. In November 2025 he became dean of the Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science, and in 2026 Denis Zorin was announced as the school's dean.
