Gerald F. DeJong
Also known as Gerald DeJong, Gerald F. DeJong II, Gerald Francis DeJong III
Gerald F. DeJong researches machine learning and language understanding. He published a 1979 report on real-time story skimming at Yale. With Raymond Mooney he published a 1986 explanation-based learning paper that uses domain knowledge to guide generalization. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 1992. A later 2006 paper connects logical support with empirical observations for inference. Illinois lists him as professor emeritus.

Timeline
-
1979
An early language-understanding report
DeJong published Skimming Stories in Real Time as a Yale technical report in May 1979.
-
1986
An alternative view of explanation-based learning
DeJong and Raymond Mooney’s 1986 paper presents an alternative generalization method for explanation-based learning of new concepts. Its abstract examines concept operationality, the organization of knowledge into schemata and learning from observation.
-
1992
Professional recognition
AAAI elected DeJong a Fellow in 1992.
-
2006 and later
Inference supported by knowledge and observations
A 2006 paper abstract proposes an explanation-based inference approach using both logical derivation and consistency with observations. DeJong is a professor emeritus at Illinois, with interests in machine learning and AI.
