Frank Rudzicz

Frank Rudzicz is a computer scientist whose AI research connects natural language processing, speech technologies and healthcare. After earning a BSc at Concordia University in 2004 and an MEng at McGill University in 2006, he completed a PhD at the University of Toronto in 2011 and co-founded the speech-analysis startup Winterlight Labs in 2015. At University Health Network in 2016, he introduced the robot Ludwig to interact with Alzheimer's and dementia patients, and he was appointed a Canada CIFAR AI Chair in 2017. He moved from the University of Toronto to Dalhousie University in 2023, became Dalhousie's Killam Memorial Chair in AI and Health in March 2025, and coauthored the ACCORD commonsense-reasoning benchmark in 2025. He is a professor in Dalhousie's Faculty of Computer Science, a Vector Institute faculty member, and director of the Atlantic AI Institute, which launched in August 2026.

Timeline

  1. 2004–2011

Degrees and an ACL speech paper

He earns a BSc at Concordia University in 2004, an MEng at McGill University in 2006, and a PhD at the University of Toronto in 2011, where a doctoral project applies natural-language processing and speech recognition to assist people with cerebral palsy. In 2010, he publishes the ACL paper “Correcting Errors in Speech Recognition with Articulatory Dynamics.”

  2. 2015

    Co-founding Winterlight Labs

In 2015, he co-founds Winterlight Labs in Toronto with Katie Fraser, Liam Kaufman and Maria Yancheva; its platform analyzes voice over the web or phone across more than 1,000 parameters to estimate the likelihood of dementia. Starting in 2015, he also serves as president of the joint ACL and ISCA Special Interest Group.

  3. 2016

    Ludwig for dementia care

At University Health Network in 2016, he combines his interests in robotics and elderly health care in Ludwig, a two-foot robot designed to interact with Alzheimer's and dementia patients and gather information on their language, mood and cognition. In 2016, he also receives an Ontario Early Researcher Award and an Excellence in Applied Research Award from National Speech-Language & Audiology Canada.

  4. 2017–2018

CIFAR AI Chair and Connaught award

He is appointed a Canada CIFAR AI Chair in 2017 and receives the Connaught Innovation Award in 2018.

  5. 2023

    Moving to Dalhousie University

In 2023, he moves from the University of Toronto to Dalhousie University with a health-first perspective on AI research, and his Canada CIFAR AI Chair is renewed. Also in 2023, UK-based Cambridge Cognition acquires Winterlight Labs.

  6. March 2025

    A Killam Memorial Chair

In March 2025, Dalhousie names him its Killam Memorial Chair in AI and Health, a role aimed at turning the university into a hub for applied AI.

  7. 2025

    ACCORD for commonsense reasoning

With François Roewer-Després, Jinyue Feng and Zining Zhu, he coauthors the 2025 NAACL paper “ACCORD: Closing the Commonsense Measurability Gap,” a benchmark for commonsense reasoning in large language models.

  8. Since 2026

Professor and Atlantic AI Institute director

In August 2026, Dalhousie launches the Atlantic AI Institute (A2I2), which he directs. He is a professor in Dalhousie's Faculty of Computer Science and a Vector Institute faculty member, researching natural language processing, speech technologies, machine learning in healthcare, explainable AI and fairness.
