Felix Gers
Also known as Félix Gers, Felix A. Gers, Felix Alexander Gers
Felix Gers is known for his work on long short-term memory (LSTM), a recurrent neural network architecture. With Jürgen Schmidhuber and Fred Cummins, he introduced the forget gate in a 1999 paper. He completed a PhD on LSTM networks at EPFL in 2001, in cooperation with IDSIA in Lugano. In 2001 he and Schmidhuber also trained LSTM to learn languages that traditional models cannot learn, and in 2002 he co-authored work on precise timing with LSTM. He is a professor of multimedia development at the Berliner Hochschule für Technik, a post he has held since 2005, and a member of its Data Science group.

1999
The forget gate for LSTM
Gers, Schmidhuber and Cummins publish 'Learning to forget: Continual prediction with LSTM' in 1999. With Jürgen Schmidhuber and Fred Cummins, he introduces the forget gate to the long short-term memory recurrent neural network architecture.

A PhD on LSTM networks
He completes a PhD thesis on LSTM networks in 2001 at EPFL, in cooperation with IDSIA in Lugano.
-
2001
Learning languages with LSTM
In 2001 he and Jürgen Schmidhuber train LSTM to learn languages that traditional models such as Hidden Markov Models cannot learn.
-
2002
Precise timing with LSTM
He, with Nicol Schraudolph and Jürgen Schmidhuber, publishes 'Learning precise timing with LSTM recurrent networks' in 2002.
-
