Researcher

Faris Abu Ali

Faris Abu Ali is a computer science researcher at DFKI whose work spans knowledge graphs for trustworthy AI and multimodal retrieval of 3D assets and CAD models. He earned a BSc in Computer Systems Engineering from Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie in 2022, then spent two years in R&D software development at Foothill Technology Solutions on Restaurant365 before returning to academia. During his RPTU master's, he built a knowledge-based extractor for trustworthy AI and developed Spotty for composed image retrieval. As of October 2026, he is a student research assistant in DFKI's Data Science and its Applications group and writes an MSc thesis with DFKI's Augmented Vision group on 3D asset and CAD retrieval.

Timeline

  1. 2022

    A computer systems engineering degree

He earns a BSc in Computer Systems Engineering from Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie in 2022. After his degree, he spends two years as an R&D Software Development Engineer at Foothill Technology Solutions, working on Restaurant365 before returning to academia.

  2. 2025–2026

    MSc research at DFKI

During Semester 4 (WiSe 2025–26) of his MSc in Computer Science at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, he carries out research projects at DFKI in its Augmented Vision and Data Science & its Applications groups.

  3. 2025–2026

    Spotty for composed retrieval

In DFKI's Augmented Vision group, he develops ∆-InstructCIR, a data-augmentation framework that trains Spotty to generate edit instructions from image pairs. Spotty generalizes to FashionIQ and CIRR after training on image-editing data; he opens the project in GitLab in October 2025.

  4. 2025–2026

    A trustworthy AI extractor

At DSA, he builds a seven-stage pipeline that extracts knowledge from regulatory documents and integrates it into an expandable Neo4j knowledge graph with human validation. In June 2026, he creates a separate GitLab project called knowledge-graphs.

  5. As of October 2026

    Research assistant at DFKI

He is a student research assistant in DFKI's Data Science and its Applications group and an MSc student in computer science at RPTU Kaiserslautern. He is writing his MSc thesis with DFKI's Augmented Vision group on multimodal retrieval of 3D assets and CAD models. His research interests include deep learning, 3D computer vision, LLMs, and knowledge graphs.
