Eddie Wu

Also known as 吴泳铭, Wu Yongming

Eddie Wu is chief executive of Alibaba Group, whose AI units include Qwen. He graduated from the College of Information Engineering at Zhejiang University of Technology in June 1996. He was technology director at Alibaba's inception in 1999 and chief technology officer of Taobao from September 2008. Alibaba announced in February 2025 that it would invest more than 380 billion yuan in cloud and AI hardware over three years. In March 2026 he took direct charge of the Alibaba Token Hub, and TIME named him to its 2026 TIME100 AI list.

    Graduating in information engineering

    He graduates from the College of Information Engineering at Zhejiang University of Technology in June 1996.

  2. 1999

    Technology director at Alibaba

    He serves as technology director at Alibaba's inception in 1999.

  3. 2008–2011

    Chief technology officer at Taobao

    He becomes chief technology officer of Taobao in September 2008. In October 2011 he takes charge of Alibaba Group's search, advertising and mobile business.

  4. 2023

    Succeeding Daniel Zhang as chief executive

    He replaces Daniel Zhang as Alibaba Group chief executive in September 2023.

  5. February 2025

    A 380 billion yuan infrastructure plan

    Alibaba announces it will invest more than 380 billion yuan in cloud and AI hardware over three years.

  6. March 2026

    Running the Token Hub

    Alibaba forms the Token Hub business division, which combines Qwen and other AI teams under Wu's direct leadership.

  7. 2026

    Named to TIME100 AI

    TIME names him to its 2026 TIME100 AI list.
