Ed Newton-Rex

Also known as Ed Rex

Ed Newton-Rex is a British composer whose work centers on how AI companies train on creators' work. After a Cambridge music degree in 2010, he founded Jukedeck, an AI music company that ByteDance bought in 2019. He led Stability AI's audio team until he resigned in November 2023 over the company's position that training generative AI on copyrighted works is fair use. Fairly Trained launched in January 2024 as a non-profit that certifies AI companies for training data that respects creators' rights, and he organized the Statement on AI Training in October 2024. TIME named him a Shaper in its 2025 TIME100 AI list, and as of October 2026 he is chief executive of Fairly Trained.
