Cosmo Du

Also known as Yu Du, 杜宇

Cosmo Du is an AI Research Scientist at Meta's TBD Lab and leads the Muse Code team. He earned a computer-science Ph.D. at Zhejiang University before joining Google Ads and Google Brain. At Google DeepMind, he became a principal scientist and director working on Gemini. He coauthored the LaMDA and SAFE papers, and his work spans dialog models, multimodal models, and reinforcement-learning systems.

  1. 2011–2018

    A doctorate and first role

    He completes a computer-science Ph.D. at Zhejiang University in 2017, then works as a software engineer at Google Ads in Shanghai from 2017 to 2018.

  2. 2019–2023

    Dialog systems and LaMDA

    He joins Google Brain in 2019 to work on task-oriented dialog and Duplex, then handles Bard and LaMDA post-training as a staff software engineer from 2021 to 2023. He coauthors LaMDA, a Transformer language-model family specialized for dialog, in 2022.

  3. 2023–2025

    Gemini research and leadership

    At Google DeepMind, he becomes a senior staff research scientist in 2023 and a principal scientist and director in 2025, working on Gemini post-training, thinking, and coding. He coauthors the 2023 Gemini report on multimodal models and the 2024 study that introduces SAFE for long-form factuality evaluation.

  4. July 2025

    Joining Meta's AI team

    He joins Meta's growing AI team in July 2025 after working on a Gemini variant that shows gold-medal-level problem-solving at the International Math Olympiad.

  5. Since 2025

    Leading Muse Code

    Since 2025, he has worked as an AI Research Scientist at Meta's TBD Lab in Menlo Park and leads the Muse Code team. His role includes post-training infrastructure, and he establishes TBD's first reinforcement-learning recipe and co-builds its RL infrastructure.
