Conrad Tucker

Also known as Conrad S. Tucker

Conrad Tucker is a mechanical engineer at Carnegie Mellon University whose work applies AI to engineering design and computer vision to health care. He earned degrees at Rose-Hulman and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, joined Penn State in 2011, and moved to Carnegie Mellon in 2019. In 2021, he coauthored a graph network for learning physical dynamics; in 2025, he coauthored V-BPE, a method for estimating blood pressure from video. He served as director of Carnegie Mellon University Africa from August 2023 through December 2025. As of October 2026, he is Trustee Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon and leads the AiPEX Lab.

Timeline

  1. 2004–2011

    Engineering degrees at Illinois

His family flees conflict in Sierra Leone, takes refuge in Guinea, and moves to the United States. He earns a BS in mechanical engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2004. At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he completes an MS in industrial and systems engineering in 2007, an MBA in 2009, and a PhD in industrial and systems engineering in 2011.

  2. 2011–2016

    Engineering design at Penn State

He joins Penn State's faculty in 2011. By 2016, he is an assistant professor of engineering design and industrial engineering, an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and director of the Design Analysis Technology Advancement lab.

  3. 2019

    Joining Carnegie Mellon

He joins Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2019. His research includes teaching computers to generate original design ideas and assess their feasibility, alongside work on virtual reality for engineering education.

  4. December 2021

    A graph network for physics

With Sakthi Kumar Arul Prakash, he coauthors “Graph network for learning bi-directional physics” in December 2021. The network learns to predict particle dynamics and infer unknown physical properties, sharing learned representations across tasks.

  5. August 2023–December 2025

    Directing Carnegie Mellon Africa

In August 2023, he becomes director of Carnegie Mellon University Africa, initially in an interim role. He serves through December 2025.

  6. September 2024

    An endowed mechanical engineering chair

Carnegie Mellon names him Trustee Professor of Mechanical Engineering in September 2024. The appointment is one of eight new endowed chairs in the College of Engineering.

  7. January 2025

    Video estimates blood pressure

With Ananyananda Dasari and Laszlo A. Jeni, he publishes “Video-based estimation of blood pressure” in January 2025. Their V-BPE method combines computer vision with information about each person to estimate blood pressure from videos of the face and hand.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading the AiPEX Lab

As of October 2026, he is Trustee Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon and leads the AiPEX Lab. The lab develops AI for engineering design, manufacturing, and autonomous systems.
