Researcher

Christian Rupprecht

Christian Rupprecht is a computer vision researcher whose learned models estimate camera poses and reconstruct 3D scenes from images. He completed BSc and MSc degrees at the Technical University of Munich and earned his PhD there in 2018 with Nassir Navab and Gregory D. Hager as advisers, then joined Oxford's Engineering Science department as a postdoctoral researcher with Andrea Vedaldi before becoming a Departmental Lecturer in Computer Vision. In 2023, he coauthored PoseDiffusion and VGGSfM; in 2025, the VGGT paper he coauthored won CVPR's Best Paper Award, and he received an ERC Starting Grant for generative-model research on training data. As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Oxford and a lead of the Visual Geometry Group, and he leads research at Third Dimension AI.

Timeline

  1. 2018

    A Munich PhD

He completes BSc and MSc degrees at the Technical University of Munich and earns his PhD there in 2018 with Nassir Navab (Technical University of Munich) and Gregory D. Hager (Johns Hopkins University) as advisers. After his PhD, he joins Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher in Engineering Science with Andrea Vedaldi, then becomes a Departmental Lecturer in Computer Vision.

  2. 2023

    PoseDiffusion and camera poses

In 2023, he coauthors PoseDiffusion, which frames camera-pose estimation as a probabilistic diffusion process conditioned on input images and uses geometric constraints to guide estimation for sparse, wide-baseline views.

  3. 2023

    A differentiable 3D pipeline

In 2023, he coauthors VGGSfM, a fully differentiable deep pipeline that learns structure-from-motion end to end and reconstructs camera poses and 3D scene structure from unconstrained images.

  4. 2025

    VGGT wins CVPR Best Paper

In 2025, he coauthors VGGT, a single deep neural network for 3D reconstruction from one to hundreds of images that estimates cameras, scene depth, and correspondences. The team receives CVPR's Best Paper Award.

  5. 2025

    An ERC Starting Grant

In 2025, he receives an ERC Starting Grant for work that makes data an active part of computer-vision model training and uses generative models to help address the shortage of labelled data.

  6. June 2026

    MMDiff for multimodal vision

In June 2026, he coauthors MMDiff, accepted at ECCV 2026; the model adapts a frozen diffusion transformer to generate images and dense perceptual outputs.

  7. As of October 2026

    Oxford and Third Dimension roles

In January 2026, he joins Third Dimension AI as Chief Researcher, where he leads work on world modeling and spatial generation while continuing his Oxford association. As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Oxford and one of the leads of the Visual Geometry Group.
