Brokoslaw Laschowski
Brokoslaw Laschowski is a machine learning researcher whose brain-inspired work links autonomous robotics and computational neuroscience. After studying neuroscience and kinesiology, he completed engineering degrees at Waterloo and developed deep-learning methods for robot vision. He worked on AI-enabled wearable robots for mobility support and later developed algorithms for brain-machine interfaces. As of October 2026, he is a research scientist and principal investigator at UHN, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, and director of the Computational Neuroscience Lab.

Timeline
-
2016–2021
Neuroscience and engineering degrees
He studies neuroscience and kinesiology as an undergraduate and master's student before earning an MASc in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 2016 and a PhD in Systems Design Engineering there in 2021 under John McPhee's supervision.
-
2021
Deep learning for robot vision
In 2021, he uses deep learning for visual intelligence, modelling visual processing in the brain to support autonomous robot control. John McPhee supervises his thesis, and collaborators William McNally and Alexander Wong are members of the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute.
-
2022
ExoNet computer vision benchmark
In 2022, he coauthors a study that benchmarks deep convolutional networks on ExoNet, an open dataset of wearable-camera images of real-world walking environments. The comparison finds MobileNetV2 achieves the best NetScore, which weighs image accuracy against computation and memory use.
-
June 2023
AI for wearable robots
In June 2023, he and his team develop AI-powered wearable robots, including bionic prosthetic legs, exoskeletons, smart glasses and neural interfaces.
-
December 2024
Computational neuroscience at KITE
In December 2024, he is a research scientist and principal investigator at UHN's KITE Research Institute. He develops machine-learning algorithms to model human perception, cognition and motor control as part of his work on brain-inspired algorithms and brain-machine interfaces.
-
October 2025
Brain-machine interface decoding
In October 2025, his Computational Neuroscience Lab develops a brain-decoding algorithm that could make brain-machine interfaces more accurate and efficient.
-
October 2025
Assistant professor (status)
In October 2025, he is a research scientist at the University Health Network and an assistant professor (status) in the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.
-
As of October 2026
Assistant professor and lab director
As of October 2026, he is a Research Scientist and Principal Investigator at UHN and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, with appointments in Neuroscience and Mechanical Engineering. He directs the Computational Neuroscience Lab, which works at the intersection of machine learning, neuroscience and AI.
