Researcher

Brian Hie

Brian Hie is a researcher who applies machine learning to the design and modeling of proteins and genomes. He earned a computer science degree at Stanford and graduate degrees at MIT, then used language models to study viral and protein evolution. His work includes protein inverse folding and the genome models Evo and Evo 2. As of October 2026, he is a Stanford chemical engineering assistant professor, an Arc Institute Innovation Investigator, and supervisor of the Laboratory of Evolutionary Design.

Timeline

  1. 2016–2021

    Stanford and MIT degrees

He earns a computer science bachelor's degree at Stanford in 2016, an EECS master's at MIT in 2019, and an EECS PhD at MIT in 2021.

  2. By 2021

A science fellowship and software roles

He is in Stanford Science Fellows' 2021 cohort and has worked as a software engineer for Google X, Salesforce, and Illumina.

  3. 2021

    Language models for viral escape

He coauthors a Science paper that uses machine learning methods developed for natural language to model viral escape.

  4. By 2022

    Protein evolution at Meta AI

As a Stanford Science Fellow and visiting researcher at Meta AI, he applies natural-language machine learning and protein language models to study protein evolution.

  5. 2022

Inverse folding with 12 million structures

He coauthors a paper that predicts protein sequences from backbone atom coordinates. The team augments training with structures predicted for 12 million protein sequences using AlphaFold2.

  6. 2024

    Evo for genome-scale modeling

Arc Institute, Stanford, and TogetherAI researchers introduce Evo, a long-context model for prediction and generative design across DNA, RNA, and proteins; Hie is among its contributors.

  7. 2025

    Co-authoring Evo 2

In 2025, he is an Innovation Investigator in Residence at Arc Institute and an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Stanford. He is a co-senior author of Evo 2, a genomic model trained across all domains of life.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading the Evolutionary Design Lab

He is an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Stanford, a Stanford Data Science faculty fellow, and an Innovation Investigator at Arc Institute. He supervises the Laboratory of Evolutionary Design, which studies biology and machine learning.
