Bill Lotter

Also known as William Lotter

Bill Lotter is a computer vision and clinical AI researcher whose work spans predictive visual learning and medical imaging. He coauthored PredNet in 2016 and led development of AI products for mammography at DeepHealth before joining Dana-Farber's Data Science faculty in October 2022. He has a PhD in Biophysics and Computational Science from Harvard University and had been named a recipient of the FY25 Wong Family Awards by December 2024 for an AI project in cancer prognostication. As of October 2026, he is an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Dana-Farber and Harvard Medical School, where his lab develops AI models that support clinical use of medical imaging.

Timeline

  1. 2016

    PredNet predicts future frames

In 2016, he coauthors Deep Predictive Coding Networks for Video Prediction and Unsupervised Learning. The paper introduces PredNet, a neural network that learns by predicting future video frames.

  2. March 2020

    RadNet to acquire DeepHealth

In March 2020, RadNet agrees to acquire DeepHealth, a company developing AI and machine-learning tools for screening mammography. Lotter is its co-founder and chief technology officer.

  3. October 2022

    Joining Dana-Farber's Data Science faculty

In October 2022, he joins Dana-Farber as an independent member of its Data Science faculty and becomes Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. As Chief Technology Officer at DeepHealth and Vice President of Machine Learning at RadNet, he leads development of two FDA-cleared products that process more than one million mammograms a year. He has a PhD in Biophysics and Computational Science from Harvard University; during his doctoral studies, he develops computer vision algorithms for computational neuroscience and medical imaging.

  4. By December 2024

    Wong Family translational award

By December 2024, he is a recipient of the FY25 Wong Family Awards in Translational Oncology. The funded project aims to combine spatial biology with routine histopathology using AI to improve cancer prognostication.

  5. 2025

    Ellison Foundation support

In 2025, the Ellison Foundation awards three grants totaling $650,000 to renew support for a group that includes Lotter and two Dana-Farber colleagues. The projects have potential to advance research and treatment across multiple cancer types.

  6. As of October 2026

    AI models for medical imaging

As of October 2026, he is an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. His lab develops AI models that use subtle patterns in medical images to improve predictive accuracy and support broader clinical use.
