Benedikt Schifferer
Benedikt Schifferer is an NVIDIA researcher whose work spans tactile sensing, recommender systems, retrieval, and mathematical reasoning. Before NVIDIA, he developed recommender systems for a German ecommerce company; he helped build NVIDIA Merlin and wrote about neural-network recommenders. He coauthored research on reranking for question answering and on visual document retrieval. In 2025, his team won AIMO-2 with a mathematical reasoning system built on OpenMathReasoning, tool-integrated reasoning, and generative selection. As of October 2026, he is a manager of an applied research team at NVIDIA focused on information retrieval and large language models.
Timeline
-
2020
Data-driven touch sensing
Before NVIDIA, he develops recommender systems for a German ecommerce company. In 2020, he coauthors a study on data-driven touch sensing in a multicurved robotic finger. He holds a Master of Science in Data Science from Columbia University.
-
2021
Neural recommenders and competition wins
In 2021, he writes a technical guide to neural-network recommenders, covering embeddings, deep models, and session-based recommendations. He helps build NVIDIA Merlin. His NVIDIA team wins first place in the ACM RecSys Challenge by predicting user engagement and providing fair recommendations.
-
2024
Reranking for question answering
In 2024, he coauthors a study that benchmarks ranking models for question-answering retrieval and introduces NV-RerankQA-Mistral-4B-v3. The paper reports about 14% higher accuracy than pipelines with other rerankers.
-
2025
OpenMathReasoning and AIMO-2
In 2025, his NVIDIA team wins the AI Mathematical Olympiad – Progress Prize 2 (AIMO-2). He coauthors the winning report on OpenMathReasoning, a math reasoning dataset for language models, with tool-integrated reasoning and generative solution selection.
-
2026
Nemotron ColEmbed V2
In 2026, he coauthors Nemotron ColEmbed V2, a family of embedding models for visual document retrieval.
-
As of October 2026
Manager of applied research
As of October 2026, he is a manager of an applied research team at NVIDIA working on information retrieval and large language models.
