Benedict Evans
Also known as Technology analysis
Benedict Evans is an independent technology analyst known for essays, presentations and a weekly newsletter. His career includes equity research, strategy, consulting and venture capital. He also took part in Andreessen Horowitz’s public discussions of mobile technology and markets. As generative AI spread, Evans examined how model capabilities could turn into products that people use regularly. His essays discuss software design, market structure, distribution and the gaps between trials and sustained use. Unbundling AI in 2023 and The AI Summer in 2024 are examples of this work. He brings the experience of earlier technology shifts to current AI questions and treats product adoption as a subject for continued analysis.
Timeline
-
Earlier career
Learning from technology markets
Evans worked in equity research, strategy, consulting and venture capital. These roles involved explaining technology markets and how businesses responded to change. His later public work drew on that experience to ask which parts of a new technical capability might become useful products and durable companies.
-
2014
Discussing the mobile transition
Evans appeared in Andreessen Horowitz’s public podcast discussions in 2014. Topics included mobile technology and its effects on markets. This work put his analysis into spoken conversation, with earlier platform changes providing a reference point for the questions he would later ask about AI.
-
October 2023
Asking what AI products will become
In Unbundling AI, Evans examined how broad model capabilities might turn into specific products. He used software comparisons to explore the distance between a powerful tool and a useful workflow. The essay asked how companies could organize new capabilities into products people understand and need.
-
2024
Following trials and repeated use
The AI Summer discussed the gap between trying generative AI and making it a regular habit. Evans considered whether users had found enough valuable tasks and whether products had the right form. His observations concerned the adoption evidence and products available at that time.
-
2026
Continuing the product question
Evans continues as an independent analyst. His public channels provide essays, presentations and a weekly newsletter about technology. The AI strand of this work asks how capabilities spread into the economy through products, companies and repeated use, alongside the practical limits of current adoption evidence.
